BOYD Cycling brings its Trade-in for Juniors month to the UK

BOYD Cycling has expanded its annual October wheel trade-in to the UK with CycloPark Charity, pairing a 20% discount with donated wheels for young riders.

BOYD Cycling has taken its annual Trade-in for Juniors programme to the UK for the first time, working with CycloPark Charity in Kent. Throughout October, riders can trade in an old wheelset and get 20% off a new pair. The traded wheels are inspected, serviced and donated to young cyclists who don't have access to good equipment.

BikeBiz reported the expansion last week, and it deserves recognition. Credit goes to Nicole Johnson, CEO and Co-Founder of BOYD Cycling, and her team, and to Jonny Hamp, CEO of Cyclopark, and the charity team who will put those wheels to use.

We believe cycling should be a sport where every kid has the chance to participate, grow, and discover this community, regardless of their circumstances,

A trade-in with a purpose

Trade-in offers are common. What makes this one stand out is that the discount and the cause are the same mechanic. A rider upgrading their wheels gets a clear, simple saving, and their old set goes to a young rider rather than sitting in a garage. Nobody has to choose between a deal and doing some good.

The terms are deliberately generous. Any wheelset counts: any brand, any model, any condition. Old, worn, damaged or simply outgrown wheels all qualify. That removes the usual friction of trade-in schemes, where customers wonder whether their kit is good enough. It also widens the audience well beyond existing BOYD owners, which is exactly who a wheel brand wants to reach.

The right partner, clearly explained

CycloPark is a strong fit. It is a multi-activity park offering ride, fitness and play activities for all ages and abilities, with a focus on opportunities for disadvantaged people. That gives the programme a real, local home in the UK rather than a vague promise of donations.

Jonny Hamp's comments do a lot of the storytelling work. He talks about confidence, friendships, new skills and community, and names the cost of equipment as a real barrier for young riders. That is a problem every cyclist understands, and it makes the case for the programme without any hard sell.

Timing, channels and retail

Owning a month is a smart move. "Trade-in for Juniors month" gives the campaign a defined window, a natural sense of urgency and a hook that can return every year. October also lands as many riders are thinking about winter upgrades.

The programme works across channels. Riders can trade in online at boydcycling.com or at any BOYD Cycling retailer, and retailers who want to take part are invited to get in touch directly. Bringing shops in gives them a reason to talk to customers, a story to share in store and footfall from riders dropping off wheels.

What other brands can take from it

  • Make the offer and the cause one action. When the purchase itself creates the good outcome, the message is simple to explain in a paid social ad, a search ad or an email subject line.
  • Remove the qualifying hurdles. "Any brand, any condition" is easy to communicate and widens the audience to competitors' customers.
  • Own a moment in the calendar. A named month builds repeatable content, gives creative a deadline and lets each year build on the last.
  • Partner with someone specific. A named charity with visible, local work gives you better stories, better imagery and more credible spokespeople than a general pledge.
  • Bring retailers with you. Include independent shops in the mechanic so your campaign becomes their community marketing too.
  • Let partners speak. A charity leader describing the impact on young riders carries more weight than any brand copy.

At Objective 1 we spend a lot of time helping cycling brands find campaign ideas that customers want to share, and this is a good example of how it can be done.

Well done to everyone at BOYD Cycling and CycloPark. The programme runs through October.
